Media Focus 24th September 2009: International Puppet Theatre?!

Shalom,

I just opened an email about an International Puppet Festival, convinced that this was going to be another article about the scandalous and libellous travesties of justice that have taken and are now taking place under UN auspices. With apologies for being such a cynic - it took a second look to establish that the email was not about the HRC or the GA of the UN, but about the success of the Israel International Puppet Festival in August this year, created and run by the Train Theater in Jerusalem!

In a year marked by the Durban Review conference (brilliantly exposed by Hillel Neuer) and the Spanish Courts' strategic withdrawal, the list runs like an interminable litany. Against these, the voices of the brave can barely be heard above the cacophony saying, "J'accuse" – and the research dedicated to the antisemitic roots of this orchestrated pseudo-legal and media pogrom against Israel demonstrates the veracity of the claims made by these courageous few.

As we examine our personal and collective conscience ahead of Yom Kippur, we realize that our introspective approach is highly self-critical – preferable to indifference: but we feel deeply hurt because Israel is entitled to demand the same protection under International Law.

The least we can do is to take on board and proclaim the main points of some of the more focused and relevant writing in this area. If the shortlist on Antisemitism and Israel, Lawfare & the Media is not complete, please forgive me for over-trimming it.

May all our prayers and visions for a better future and happiness be granted,

Gmar hatima tova,

Gila

Facebook, Holocaust Denial, and Anti-Semitism 2.0, Dr Andre Oboler,

August 2009, Institute for Global Jewish Affairs (JCPA).

Excerpt:

"In May 2009, Facebook went into damage control in response to the media interest in Holocaust-denial groups it hosted. This occurred six months after Facebook was notified that such groups not only breached its Terms of Service but were illegal under national laws banning Holocaust denial in several countries."

Analysis and report on Facebook's volte-face on incitement defamation policy that allows Holocaust Denial groups to flourish, and the grave implications for racism and Antisemitism on narrowcasting in the online social networking era.

2. Israel, Lawfare & Media

Israel and the Trouble With International Law, Paul H Robinson,

Wall Street Journal, 22nd September 2009

Many restrictions on the use of force against aggressors make no moral sense.

Excerpt:

"The rules of international law governing the use of force by victims of aggression are embarrassingly unjust and would never be tolerated by any domestic criminal law system. They give the advantage to unlawful aggressors and thereby undermine international justice, security and stability." (on Article 51 of the UN Charter)
